Civ 6 with expansions no need for the Frontier Pass though at least not yet. 6 Is the most interesting but 5 is better balanced. Civ 5 had the best combat but felt a little more like a board game and lacked personality.
However 5 also is a wonder rush game so you have to limit yourself or play at deity to really have fun with it after a while. There is also no right way to play the game sure there is a best way to exploit the AI but the AI is pretty sad in 6. Especially with the lack of unit stacking its so easy to exploit the AIs weaknesses and bad decision making.
Depends on the map and how you like to play. Id say franks mayans and Britons on open maps. Seems pretty solid to me.

No other game in the series came close which I first assumed was because most people in. No mention of Civ4 which was probably the best in the series and I hope is the spiritual inspiration for Civ7. Arguably one of the best available for the game is the Environment Skin mod which alters the map visuals to bring them more in line with Civilization 5.
I do still have some issues with 6 and I dont think Ill ever have more fun playing Civ than I did with Civ 4 back in the day even the mods were incredible. Well at deity they seem to fight just fine. Probably Japanese or Persians on hybrid maps.

The correct answer is whichever one you enjoy the most. Civilization games should NOT about who can manouver their pieces best on a map. The leap between Civilization IV and V is perhaps the biggest in series history and theres a very good reason for.
6 is very similar to 5 and has even better combat as well as more fleshed out cultural options but I also feel that it is much less forgiving with city planning. Civ 5 was great too I put a lot of hours into it. Civ 4 was probably the best but I didnt have time in my life at the point to put into gaming in general.
